Glazed Orange Scones Recipe
This glazed orange scones recipe is delicious and comes together quickly for a baked scone treat anytime. This basic recipe is made with sour cream, which is convenient because I almost always have sour cream on hand, but not buttermik. Whether you serve them as part of a brunch or want to give your family a weekend breakfast treat this is an easy recipe you can make.
When it comes to serving these scones, choosing the right spread can make them even more special. I like serving these with whipped butter, as not to take away from their flavor. But an orange marmalade served is also a great complimenting choice. Of course scones can pair well with any jam, honey, butter, or with fruit and cheese. So give yourself a treat and try these orange glazed scones.
How to Make Glazed Orange Scones
To get started, set the oven to 400 degrees. Then gather up all your ingredients and a large bowl mixing bowl. Keep in mind that really cold butter to make nice, flaky scones, so put it in the freezer for a few minutes. In the large bowl add the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and baking powder and set it aside.
In a separate bowl, add the egg, sour cream orange juice and orange extract and wisk it until it’s completely smooth. Giving these wet ingredients a good mixing will prevent the dough from clumping. Now, pour this mixture over the dry ingredient and mix with a large fork.
Take the cold butter and a cheese grater and grate the butter into the large mixing bowl. (If you don’t have a grater you can chop the butter up into small pieces with a knife.) Once the butter is in the bowl, start combining it into the mixture. You can also use a pastry blender for this.
As the dough starts to form, remove it from the bowl and place it on a floured board or counter and knead it by hand into a ball. Then chill the dough for 10 minutes.
Take the dough and loosely roll it up into balls and place on a baking sheet. While they are baking, mix up the glaze. Take the scone out of the oven, cool them and drizzle with glaze.
For tender glazed orange scones, the dough should be kneaded until smooth, but do not over-knead it.
Once the dough is kneaded, chill it in the refrigerator for around 10 minutes. Then remove the dough and form 8 to 10 loosely rolled balls. Do not pack the dough, just roll it lightly with your hands and place on a baking sheet. Bake the scones for 15 to 17 minutes, them take them out of the oven and let them cool. Prepare the glaze and drizzle it over the scones before serving.

Notes
Glazed orange scones can last up to 2 days in the refrigerator or will keep if wrapped well out on the countertop and served right away. When freezing scones, cool them first, then wrap them snugly in plastic wrap, but do not glaze them until ready to defrost and serve.
How to Store Glazed Orange Scones
To keep scones fresh for as long as possible I have some tips for storing scones so that they stay fresh for days. One thing to keep in mind when storing scones is to let them cool completely before you put them away. This will prevent condensation from forming inside the container, which can make the scones go stale.
Once your scones are cooled, you can store them in an airtight container or plastic storage bag. If you’re planning to eat them within a day or two, you can leave them on the counter at room temperature. But if you want them to last longer, it’s best to store them in the freezer.
When storing scones in the freezer, wrap them in plastic wrap but you should skip the glaze until the day you serve them. Then when you’re ready to take the scones out of the freezer, simply let them thaw at room temperature, glaze them and serve.
