Glazed Orange Scones Recipe

This homemade glazed orange scones recipe is delicious and comes together easily. They can be made large like shown here or smaller for more servings. 

Ingredients

For Scones
1/3 Cup granulated sugar
Zest from one orange (optional)
1-Teaspoon orange extract
1-Teaspoon orange juice
2-Cups all-purpose flour
1-Teaspoon baking powder
1/4 Teaspoon baking soda
1/2 Teaspoon salt
1-Stick of cold butter (8 tablespoons)
1/2 Cup sour cream
1 Large egg
A small bit of flour for kneading

For Glaze
1-Tablespoon of butter
1-Cup confectioners’ sugar
1/2 Tablespoon milk
1-Tablespoon of orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 
  2. Put the butter into your freeze
  3. In the large bowl add the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and baking powder and set it aside.
  4. In a separate bowl, add the egg and sour cream and wisk it until it’s smooth. Add in orange juice, orange extract and mix it again until completely smooth. 
  5. Pour wet mixture into the dry ingredients and combine with a large fork.
  6. Take the cold butter out of the freezer, grate it into the large mixing bowl and start incorporating it until a dough starts to form.
  7. Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a flat, floured surface to knead into a ball. Do not over-knead.
  8. Take the dough and chill it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  9. Next, remove the dough from the refrigerator and form 8 or 9 loosely rolled balls. 
  10. Bake the scones for 15 to 17 minutes, then cool them. 
  11. Prepare the glaze and drizzle it over the scones before serving.

Notes

Glazed orange scones can last up to 2 days in the refrigerator or will keep if wrapped well out on the countertop and served right away. When freezing scones, cool them first, then wrap them snugly in plastic wrap, but do not glaze them until ready to defrost and serve.
