If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to update your outdoor patio furniture, then painting it might be the perfect solution. Not only is it an affordable option, but it can also give your furniture a fresh new look that can last for years.
As someone who loves spending time outdoors, I want comfortable patio furniture that looks good. However, after a few seasons of use, outdoor furniture can start to look worn and faded. That’s where painting comes in. With just a few coats of paint, you can transform old furniture into something that looks new again. Here are some ideas for painting patio furniture.

Cleaning and Sanding Outdoor Furniture
Before you start painting your outdoor patio furniture, it’s important to do the right prepping before painting. First, clean the furniture thoroughly by using a mixture of warm water and mild soap.
Next, sand your furniture to create a smooth surface for the paint to stick to. I use medium-grit sandpaper or for bigger jobs my Ryobi Corner Cat Sander with Dust Bag to really get into nooks and corners. And while sanding is always good, some furniture may also need a good primer as well, so I recommend Zinsser primers to give the paint a good base to stick to.
Selecting the Right Paint
The type of paint you choose will depend on the material of your furniture. For metal furniture, choose a paint that is designed for outdoor use and is rust-resistant. For this table set shown here, I used Rust-Oleum spray paint. These days they also make metallics, paint for plastics and even spray on chalk paint.
My DIY Patio Furniture Update
Now let me tell you how I came to own this table set shown below. Enter the husband who loves tag sales and bringing home surprise stuff. Now imagine the look on my face when my husband brought this old table set home. The chairs didn’t even match the table, as I think someone tried painting it once and gave up on the chairs LOL! After much convincing to keep it, updating this patio furniture took a lot of love and a lot of work, but we did it.
So, after a lot of cleaning, washing, and sanding, I chose a Rustoleum spray paint in ocean mist. I wanted to play up its retro look and also give it a beachy feel, too.
I didn’t have the area rug in place yet for the picture, but now just look at it. With new paint, cushions, pillows, and accessories we’ve got an updated patio set for much less than half the cost of a new one. It just goes to show that with a little bit of work, you can have updated patio furniture that looks amazing and makes you happy.
